Situation

November 1983: Following the shooting-down of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 and the invasion of Grenada on September, the tension of between the East and the West has increased significantly as NATO prepares for the Exercise Able Archer 83, in which NATO engages in a wargame with a simulated nuclear option.

As the Soviet intelligence determines to find out if this is just an exercise or just a ruse for a coordinated pre-emptive strike attack using the United States’ new Pershing II ballistic missiles, East German and Polish troops stationed in the German border are placed in high alert should the exercise go thermonuclear. Also Soviet mobile strategic nuclear missiles are brought to firing positions as Soviet bloc flies multiple sorties of reconnaissance flights along the border region.

Meanwhile the United States 2nd Armoured Division’s attached CEWI battalion is testing out their new electronic warfare equipment on a routine exercise in West Germany. A sudden power surge in Madgeburg, the headquarters of the 3rd Red Banner Combined Arms Army, combined with the interference from the EW equipment sets off a chain reaction of panicky phone calls all over Bezirk Magdeburg.
After several hours of being cut off from higher command, the commander of the East German 11th Motor Rifle Division is ordered to cross the German border with 11th Panzer Regiment spearheading the assault as it’s feared that NATO has launched a nuclear attack under the guise of the wargame exercise. Mission objectives are as follows, perform a flanking manoeuvre to the northern side of Helmstedt and further prepare to move towards Brunswick and Hanover.
